Ohitayama-tatara Iron Works
This is the ruins where people made iron by mixing iron sand with charcoal in a hearth and using “Fuigo” (a bellows) in Edo period. This hearth is called “TaTara”, and people operated this hearth 3 times 1751~1764, 1812~1822, 1855~1867. Iron made in place was used for the battleship “Heishinmaru” which was built by the domain of Hagi during the end of Edo period.
Shoukasonjuku
This is the private school where Shoin Yoshida educated disciples. Shoin Yoshida intended to build a country assimilating education, science and industry of eastern countries. Many of his disciples succeeded to his will and did their best to build a modern nation. Many of talented people who played important role in Japanese modernization and industrialization learned at this school.
“Fumi-gozen” lunch at Hagi Sea mart
“Fumi-gozen” is a premium dish in Hagi, arranged in modern style, imagining Fumi Sugi, heroine of NHK Taiga drama. You will be feasted with fresh seafood from Hagi on Hagi pottery, glass and a box of 9 square paulownia wood. We recommend you to book early, because number of dish and time are limited.
Hagi hansyaro
This reverberatory furnace was metal melting furnace for making cannon, introduced for one of the reinforcement military and navy power of Hagi domain. This reverberatory furnace is thought to be built tentatively in 1856, and there is part of 10.5m high chimney remains. This is very precious ruins for history of industrial science, because there are only two reververatory furnaces remains, Nirayama in Shizuoka and here Hagi.
Ebisugahana shipyard
Edo shogunate removed the ban of domains building large vessel to reinforce military and navy power, and required Hagi domain to build large eastern vessel in 1853. Ebisugahara shipyard was established in 1856, then the first eastern wooden sailing vessel “Heishinmaru” was built and “Koshinmaru” was built after that. There is still large scale of seawall remains.
Hagi castle town
“Hagijo jokamachi” , designated as national historical place is located outside the wall of Hagi castle and formed with three districts, Hagi castle ruins, higher ranking samurai residence and townspeople living place. Grid-shaped town streets conserve old sight, such as Kikuya-yokosho, Iseya-yokocho, Edoya-yokocho and Kikuyake residence.
